Melamchi project works expedited

Works have been expedited to complete the final 7.3km section of the 26km tunnel of the Melamchi Water Supply Project, official have said.
According to Rajendra Prasad Panta, an engineer at the Melamchi Water Supply Development Committee, about 29 percent of the tunnel’s RCC works are left to be done, and if works are carried out at the current pace, the project might complete by the next 35 days.
The tunnel has been constructed till the three access routes at Sindhu, Gyalthum and Ambathan.An agreement has been reached to complete RCC works on at least 250 meters of the tunnel per day. The works will get halted during the Dashain and Tihar holidays.
In 2013, the government had signed a contract with an Italian construction company for the construction of Melamchi Pipeline. But the contract was extended time and again as the project could not complete by the allocated time.
The latest deadline was extended by three months with the condition of bringing water from the Melamchi stream to Sundarijal before Dashain.
