EC fails to resolve party name row
Election Commissioners failed to resolve the row over the name of Nepal Communist Party (NCP) at its meeting held on Thursday.Election Commissioners failed to resolve the row over the name of Nepal Communist Party (NCP) at its meeting held on Thursday.
Earlier this year, the NCP was formed after the unification of CPN (UML) and CPN Maoist Centre and Rishiram Kattel-led Nepal Communist Party, which has been in existence since 2013.
The verdict over the issue has come to the jurisdiction of Election Commission (EC) after representatives of both the parties on Wednesday failed to come to a mutual understanding over the issue triggered by significant resemblance over the party’s name. Another meeting is scheduled on Friday.
After the meeting ended, EC Joint Secretary Deepak Subedi said, “Election Commissioners referred legal aspects and pondered over the pros and cons of a probable decision today.”
He said all political parties would have to comply with EC’s decision within 35-days from the date of taking the decision.
The EC had registered the Nepal Communist Party (NCP) and accepted the acronym as the part of the party name. Kattel argues his party has the name and acronym and therefore seeks solution from the EC.
