Woman, 80, and grandson perish in shelter fire

Dolakha District Police Chief DSP Basudev Pathak said the fire engulfed Gopal Sherpa’s temporary shelter around 2 am. His mother Dalaki Sherpa, 80, and son Mingma Sherpa, 12, died on the spot, while daughter Phusangi Sherpa, 15, sustained burn injuries in the incident. Local residents rescued Phusangi who was lying unconscious.
Police said Phusangi is admitted to the district hospital Charikot for medical treatment. According to the police, seven members of Gopal’s family lived in the temporary shelter. However, Gopal along with his spouse and another son were sleeping in a nearby shed when the incident occurred.Police suspect that the fire could have started from the quilt that Dalaki was using as she was sleeping close to the hearth. The fire was brought under control with the assistance of police and locals at around 4:30am.
