Nagarkot tourism sector slams double entry fees
Oct 30, 2018-
Tourists visiting Nagarkot are being charged entry fees at Changu Narayan Municipality in Bhaktapur and at Mandan Deupur Municipality in Kavre, much to the worry of tourism entrepreneurs who say the two local units are sending out a negative message by forcing foreign visitors to pay two times.
Organising a press conference on Sunday, tourism entrepreneurs requested the two municipal offices to stop fleecing foreigners in the name of revenue collection.
Foreigners will stop visting Nagarkot if they are made to pay entry fees twice, they said.
Nagarkot is located at the border of Bhaktapur and Kavre. Changunarayan Municipality, which lies in Bhaktapur district, began charging entry fees to foreign visitors from last year.
Mandan Deupur Municipality in Kavre district introduced entry fee for tourists from this year.
Dhan Bahadur Lama, secretary of Nagarkot Naldum Tourism Development Committee, says dual fees imposed on the foreign tourists has already hit the number of tourist arrivals to Nagarkot.
According to him, the number of visitors has gone down by nearly 30 per cent compared to the same period last year. Local businesses have been hit with the decline in the number of tourist arrival, he added.
Changunarayan Municipa-lity has been charging Rs 200 each as entry fee to the tourists from SAARC member states and Rs 300 each to the visitors from other countries.
Mandan Deupur Municipa-lity, meanwhile, charges Rs 226 each to the tourists from SAARC countries and Rs 339 each from other nations.
