Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli was admitted to Manmohan Cardiothoracic Vascular and Transplant Centre in Maharajgunj, Kathmandu, on early Monday morning with complaints of chest pain and breathing difficulty.
Doctors said the prime minister was suffering from lower respiratory tract infection and his blood count as well as sugar level were low.
He has been admitted to the intensive care unit and his condition is said to be improving.
According to the doctors, the prime minister would require at least three days’ convalescence period and another few days of observation, ruling out the need of visiting abroad for treatment.
Prime Minister Oli was not feeling well since Friday. His poor health had kept him from attending a tea reception organised by the Nepal Communist Party on Saturday.
His participation in Sunday’s Cabinet meeting was also brief.
The prime minister is being attended by Dr Divya Singh, his personal physician, Dr Santa Das and senior cardiologist Dr Arun Sayami.
Dr Singh said constant travelling, meetings and engagements, even during the Dashain holidays, might have exacerbated the prime minister’s health problem.
Several leaders from Nepal Communist Party and government ministers, including party Co-chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal, Madhav Kumar Nepal and Home Minister Ram Bahadur Thapa, visited Prime Minister Oli at the hospital to inquire about his health on Monday.
Prime Minister Oli had undergone transplant surgery of both kidneys in India in 2007. Since then, he has remained under strict medical observation that entails visiting Thailand regularly for medical check-up.
More recently, the prime minister had undergone a prostate surgery in India in 2014.
