A 55-year-old man succumbed to bullet injuries following a violent clash between supporters of the Nepal Communist Party (NCP) and the Nepali Congress at Bauharwa in Sarlahi district on Tuesday. Seven other people sustained shrapnel injuries in the incident.

Superintendent of Police Poshraj Pokharel identified the victim as Rambilas Mahato of Ramnagar Rural Municipality-4. It was still not clear who opened the fire.

The deceased and all the injured are Congress supporters. Rambilas was the uncle of Ram Naresh Mahato, the ward chairman of Ramnagar-4. Police said a dispute erupted between the two groups on Monday in which ward chairman Ram Naresh was manhandled. Dispute between the two rival forces in the village had been going on for quite some time over several local issues.

Rakesh Prasad Gupta, a local youth, said that a group of some 200 ruling party cadres barged into the houses of local residents and attacked them. “The assailants opened fire as we tried to retaliate,” said Gupta. Rambilas, who stayed near his house, was hit in the head and abdomen and died on the spot. Locals claimed that the NCP cadres also vandalised an ambulance that reached the site to take the injured to hospital.

NC lawmaker Amaresh Kumar Singh claimed that NCP activists led by Shivapujan Raya had attacked the villagers. He accused the police of not arresting the assailants.
