Leadership of the ruling Nepal Communist Party (NCP) has vowed to expedite the unification process of the party's lower committees after Tihar festival.
While announcing the merger between the erstwhile CPN-UML and CPN (Maoist Centre) to form the NCP in May, senior leaders from both parties had announced that the party unification process would be completed within three months.
Five months down the line, the NCP has yet to unite the provincial, district and local committees of the old parties. Unification of sister wings and central departments remain uncertain. And most of the party's central members are jobless as the NCP leadership has failed to finalise work division within the party.
NCP Co-chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal told reporters in Biratnagar on Monday that the unification process was taking time because the party didn't want to take any hasty decision.
Many leaders, however, believe that the party leadership is having a tough time finalising the merger, with a large number of aspirants wanting to remain in the party’s helm from both the erstwhile CPN-UML and CPN (Maoist Centre).
To take the merger process ahead, a recent secretrait meeting of the NCP has formed a task force comprising Home Minister Ram Bahadur Thapa and party's General Secretary Bishnu Poudel to chart out the work divisions for the central members while completing the provincial committees whose four top leaders have already been selected.
It is expected to present their reports at the next secretariat meeting, before they are endorsed by the standing committee.
The NCP is expected to convene its secretariat meeting right after Tihar festival to determine the date of standing committee meeting.
“The secretariat meeting will announce the date for the standing committee meeting, which will discuss all the pending issues including unification and assessment of government’s performance,” said Narayan Kaji Shrestha, party spokesperson.
The NCP standing committee meeting has faced several postponements in the past. The latest one, scheduled for October 29-30, was put off after the Prime Minister and party Co-chairman KP Sharma Oli was taken ill.
