The local level representatives have expressed commitments to make maximum efforts to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) which include ensuring public access to education, health and social security facilities.

The local governments have accorded high priority to the advancement of education, health and social security sectors in their periodic plans, they said at the ongoing international conference on Women Participation in Inclusive Development of Nepal, jointly organised by the Nepal Muslim Women Welfare Society and the World Muslim Communities Council, in Kathmandu on Tuesday.

The participants said women leadership at the local level should be more active to implement the women’s rights granted by the constitution.

Shanta Laxmi Shrestha of Beyond Beijing Committee highlighted the need of coming up with programmes capable of supporting the achievements of SDGs by the local governments.

Seema Khan, chairperson of the Nepal Muslim Women Welfare Society, said despite significant political achievements in the recent years, there was no substantive change in the economic and social life of women from the marginalised community.

Ali Rashid Al Nuaimi, chairman of the World Muslim Communities Council, said inclusive development was a must to meet the SDGs.

He was of the view of involving marginalised women in income-generating activities to improve their economic standard.

Mohammed Bechari, secretary general of the council, said inclusive development would contribute to achieving economic prosperity and sustainable development was possible only with  the participation of women.
