She touches the tiles

printed with the face of gods

and worships them with her innocent smile

She hurries,

for there are many such gods

lined against the walls

Her friend,

the boy from the same class follows her

they compete in touching the tiles,

with their little hands

and, touching their forehead with the same one

hurriedly, almost like a tiny slap

for their unknown wishes to be fulfilled

He begins every morning with empty buckets

Rushes to the well

Waits in a queue half asleep

fills the buckets like a clockwork

and, saves the used water for daily chores

He rides his budho cycle

through the creamy mud

like a professional swimmer,

trying to bag a medal in the Olympics

and he rides it back home

at the end of the day

He is a valley dweller

clichéd as the lotus in the mud

prone to all the scarring

without the protective covering

against the rot.
