Tamang, Rai qualify for Faldo Asia Final

Subash Tamang and Sukra Bahadur Rai qualified for the Faldo Series Asia Final after winning their respective age-group competitions of the CMS Faldo Series Junior Nepal Championship at the Gokarna Golf Club on Wednesday.
Tamang won the U-16 category while Rai secured the top place in the U-12 category. Tamang also won the overall championship with the best card of five-under 211 while Rai finish overall second at even-par 216. Kashmira Shah won the girls’ category title but missed the chance to represent Nepal in the Asia Final due to her poor card. Shah finished the three-day score at 45-over 261.
Tamang carded two-over 38 on the front nine and even par 36 on the back nine. It was Tamang’s only over-par card in three rounds. He had carded one-under 71 in the first and six-under 66 in the second round. Tamang parred the opening hole of the day but had a double bogey on the par-4 second. He earned a shot back in the very next hole. Tamang parred the next two holes but again dropped a shot on the sixth.
Tamang took the turn at two-over 38 after parring the next two holes. His back nine card included a birdie on the 17th against a bogey on the par-3 13th. Sam Doublard finish a distant second at nine-over 223 after carding three-over 75 on Wednesday. Doublard shot one-over 37 on the front nine and two-over 38 on the back nine. Binod Tamang finished three stroke behind Doublard in third at 241.
Rai, the surprise Surya Nepal Eastern Open champion last month in Dharan, returned with the only under-par card of the day—two-under 70 -for a three—for a total of even-par 216. Rai won the Eastern Open title at the Nirvana County Club on December 29, joining the current Nepal No 1 professional golfer Shivaram Shrestha and Rupak Acharya as the golfer to clinch a pro title an amateur. Rai shot one-under in each half with birdies on the 7th, 11th, 14th and 18th against bogeys on the 15th and 16th holes. Rahul BK finished 12 strokes adrift of Rai in second after carding three-over 75 on Wednesday. Suman Pariyar ended up in third at 239.
A total of 17 golfers in U-16, seven in U-21 and three in girls’ categories were in fray for tickets to the 13th Faldo Series Asia Grand Final to be hosted by Sir Nick Faldo at Laguna Lang Co in Danang, Vietnam, in March this year. Nepal Golf Association and Gokarna Forest Resort jointly organised the 54-hole tournament under the sponsorship of ISME Pvt Ltd.
