Kedar Sahani, a notorious criminal enlisted in the most wanted list of police, died of bullet injuries in a shootout near the Nepal-India border in Siddharthanagar Municipality-10, Rupandehi district, on Saturday night.
According to Superintendent of Police Hridaya Thapa, two assailants in a motorcycle opened fire at a police patrol team during security check, and a shootout ensued. “Plain-clothed security personnel were deployed in the border area to control smuggling. We had to take retaliatory action after the assailants on a motorcycle with an Indian registration number plate fired at the police,” said SP Thapa.
Sahani sustained bullet injuries in the shootout and later died in the course of treatment at Bhim Hospital. The other assailant, however, fled the incident site. Police Constable Krishna Shrestha also sustained bullet injuries in the shootout.
Police recovered an automatic pistol loaded with bullets and the motorcycle (UP 53 H 2028) from the incident site.
Police also claimed that Sahani had been involved in various criminal activities including murder, abduction and extortion. He was also affiliated with an armed outfit, Ajad faction of Janatantrik Mukti Morcha.
As per the record available in the District Police Office, Sahani had also been involved in an abduction and subsequent murder of Aakash Gurung of Siddharthanagar-8 four years ago. Gurung was abducted on September 13, 2014 and murdered a week later. According to police, Gurung was shot dead after his family failed to provide Rs 10 million as ransom. Sahani had also served jail term on arms and ammunitions charges.
