Positive steps

Jan 15, 2019-

For the first time in Nepal’s tourism history, the number of tourists has crossed the one million mark (‘Tourist arrivals cross coveted 1-million mark’, Jan 8, 2019, TKP Online).

Yet there are some crucial but simple issues that seek immediate remedy. Tourists and non-resident Nepalis (NRNs) arriving in Nepal should be allowed to bring at least $10,000 so they can spend more; visas should be made complimentary for  two weeks stay fior all inbound tourists,  the Nepal Government should launch online visa registration facilities like in other tourist destination countries around the world. At TIA and

upcoming international airports, the immigration counters must be expanded and more fully staffed, the green channel customs clearance procedure should be made hassle free, and the arrivals area should at least have duty free facilities and universally accessible toilets. Similarly, the Nepal Government should run tourist buses to major hotels and areas within the city as taxi drivers always hustle for higher fares. This will give the tourists a more ‘Welcome Namaste!’
