Vodafone Fiji has issued about 1.1 million permanent eTransport cards for a population of more than 880,000 people as it moves into a cashless society. The company has urged commuters to top up and use their permanent cards and not rely solely on disposable cards as they have run out of disposable cards which cost 2 Fijian dollars (about $0.94) because they did not expect an influx in customers in December, reports Fijivillage news website on Wednesday. The Fijian government has topped up about 80,000 student eTransport cards as part of its efforts to provide free bus fares to Fijian students who come from low income families and have started school this week. For years, the government has made moves towards a cashless society and to change the mindsets of people.
