Dr KC ends hunger strike
Feb 2, 2019-
Anti-corruption crusader Dr Govinda KC ended his 16th hunger strike on the 24th day on Friday without negotiations and agreement with the government on his demands.KC broke his hunger strike by drinking juice offered by Amrit Pujari, a helper at the Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital, and former chief justice Sushila Karki.
“Hospitals were closed today because of my hunger strike. If it continued, such a situation could be created again and again. I was also repeatedly requested by my respected seniors, so I decided to end my hunger strike,” said KC.
The Nepal Medical Association on Friday called doctors across the country to shut down all the general services except emergency, depriving patients of health services.
Civil society leaders and members of the Kedar Bhakta Mathema-led committee that recommended reforms in the country’s medical education had suggested that KC end his hunger strike because he needed to live as his role would be crucial in future to warn and put pressure on the government to effect reforms in the medical sector.
Former president Ram Baran Yadav had also personally requested KC to end his indefinite fast.
“The revised bill, which is against the welfare of students and citizens, has been passed from the Lower and Upper Houses but has yet to be implemented. President Bidya Devi Bhandari can still play a crucial role by sending it back for discussion, which I request her to do,” said KC.
KC has threatened to stage a 17th hunger strike if the bill is implemented.
“There is still time to amend the bill by incorporating important recommendations of the Mathema-report and as per previous agreements,” said KC.
