Cadres of Nepal Students Union (NSU), the student wing of the main opposition Nepali Congress, resorted to violent protests against the government’s misuse of its vehicles in various places on Saturday.

Members of the NSU said the protest aims to control the misuse of government vehicles during holidays.

In Pokhara, the protesting NSU activists torched a government vehicle belonging to Pokhara Metropolis at Masbar area. The protesters took the vehicle (Ba 1 Jha 5879) under control and torched it as a part of their programme to restrict government vehicles from plying the road during holiday.

Meanwhile, police arrested five persons for their alleged involvement in the arson. A police team deployed by the Ward Police Office, Baidam, nabbed them from a hotel at lakeside.

The arrestees have been identified as former Nepal Student Union President of Pokhara University Rajendra Baral, Parshuram Basnet and Laxmi Prasad Paudel, among others. Police also impounded a motorbike and a scooter that were used to torch the vehicle.

NSU central member Bhanu Dhakal said that although the plan was to impound government vehicles found to be plying the road during holiday, some cadres torched the vehicle in a fit of rage. Dhakal has demanded for the unconditional release of the arrested NSU activists. Similarly in Accham, the NSU members vandalised a jeep belonging to Mellekh Rural Municipality. The students vandalised the vehicle ( Ba 2 Jha 4188) while it was returning to Achham from Silgadhi of Doti. Ganesh Khadka, the NSU district president, owned up to the incident and said the student organisation took the action as the government vehicle was being used during holiday.
