Nepal Billiards, Snooker and Pool Association is organising the first Sakura Snooker Open Championship from March 13.
The nine-day tournament will be participated in by 128 players and offers a cash purse of Rs 110,000 to the champion. The first runner-up will get Rs 40,000, while others rounding up inside the top 16 places will also get their share of cash prizes. All the matches will take place at the Sakura Snooker Club in Jamal.
Eight top seed players who are currently in the national team are barred from participating in the tournament as they will go through a separate event that will form a new team. According to the association, the tournament will pick up the top eight players and another selection event will be held from March 24.
A total of eight players will make the cut for the national team, while the top two players from the selection tournament will represent Nepal in the first SAARC Snooker Championship to be held in Bangladesh from July 20-27. The association President Saroj Mulmi, a three-time former Nepal champion himself, said they now have big plans with the sport for the future.
“Unlike the past leadership, we will not remain passive in the development of the game. There are several individuals in the current committee who love the game and we will continue to nurture the new eight-member national team for future events. We are also planning to organise billiards and pool in coming days,” said Mulmi.
