LONDON: Durham have appointed shamed Australia batsman Cameron Bancroft as captain for the upcoming English County Championship and One-day Cup season, the northeast county announced Thursday. Bancroft was banned for nine months for ball-tampering in a Test against South Africa in Cape Town last March, with Australia captain Steve Smith and deputy David Warner receiving year-long bans. His ban ended in December. Durham high performance coach James Franklin and the county’s director of cricket Marcus North, a former Australia batsman, decided to appoint Bancroft as captain in succession to retired England all-rounder Paul Collingwood.
