The Kanchanpur District Court on Sunday ordered the bail release of former chief of Kanchanpur district police Dilli Raj Bista who was charged with tampering of evidence and mishandling the investigation into the rape and murder of 13-year-old Nirmala Pant.

He had appeared before the court on March 19. Hari Krishna Awasthi, the court registrar, said a single bench of Judge Rajendra Kumar Acharya ordered Bista to post Rs1.05 million as bail.  Bista was freed after paying the bail amount.

On March 6, the Office of District Attorney had lodged a case against eight police officials including Bista for allegedly torturing an innocent man to extract false confession and tampering evidence while investigating Pant’s murder.

Six of them were freed on bail on March 14.

Nirmala was raped and murdered at Bhimdutta Municipality in Kanchanpur district on July 26 last year. Police are still clueless about the culprit(s) involved in the gruesome murder.
