Libraries set up in district prisons of Karnali Province

Mahesh Bikram Shah, chief at the Karnali Provincial Police Office, said, “There are a total of 4,282 books worth Rs 2.1 million in 10 prisons. The books were provided by various organisations, publication houses and individuals.”
A ‘book club’ has been formed in each of the district prison to manage the libraries. Shah said they also have plans to hold interaction programmes between the inmates and writers in the future.
Dharmaraj Bishwokarma, an inmate of Surkhet District Prison, said that this campaign will be effective in correcting the behaviours of inmates.
Mahendra Bahadur Shahi, chief minister of the Karnali Province, said, “A library will help the inmates to change their behaviour.”
In Salyan, Chief District Officer Chudaram Neupane inaugurated the district prison’s library. There are 1,817 books in the library of Salyan District Prison alone. Mohan Thapa, an inmate of salyan prison, was happy after a library was set up in the prison.
“Inmates now have an opportunity to read books and utilise their time in the prison,” said Thapa.
