Rights body team probes into Kiran’s suspicious death

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has initiated investigation into the death of 15-year-old Kiran Karki Dholi who died while in police custody in Birtamod, Jhapa, on April 14.The NHRC team from its provincial office in Biratnagar has been looking into the case for the past three days. In an interaction programme organised in Birtamod on Saturday, investigation officer of the NHRC Chiranjivi Koirala termed the incident ‘suspicious’.
“Police personnel cannot beat a suspect who is taken into custody,” said Koirala, adding that a detailed investigation is underway into the case. “We will soon make public our report,” said Koirala.
The two-member NHRC probe team inspected the police custody and met with Chief District Officer, district police chief, in-charge of Area Police Office in Birtamod and other stakeholders. They also talked with the victim’s family about the incident.
The teenager’s death, initially ruled as suicide by police, is being investigated following public uproar. Three police teams have been formed at the local, district and provincial levels to probe the teenager’s death.
