Expecting mothers face problems due to lack of birthing centre

Pregnant women, new mothers and newborn at Mahottari Rural Municipality in Mahottari district are at risk of several health issues due to lack of a birthing centre.

The rural municipality, which has a population of over 30,000, does not have a single birthing centre to cater to the needs of expecting mothers, according to rural municipality’s Health Joint-coordinator Saroj Kumar Jha.

Bedani Devi Mahato, a female health volunteer in Ward-5 of the rural municipality, said pregnant women, who go into labour in the evening or at night, particularly face difficulties to get to the health facilities.

Mahottari Rural Municipality Chairman Sunil Kumar Jha said that they will son open a well-equipped birthing centre.

The rural municipality is also preparing to run safe motherhood programme.

To this end, according to Jha, the rural municipality is providing training to female community health volunteers.
