National Sports Council is organising the fourth edition of the Prime Minister Cup Women’s National Twenty20 cricket tournament from June 11 in Mahendranagar.

The top sports governing body of the country has handed over the management responsibilities to Mahakali Sports Society. The tournament, however, can see change in the date as it coincides with the Women’s Twenty20 League organised by NCL Sports Pvt Ltd. The Women’s Twenty20 League is slated to be held at the Tribhuvan University Stadium.

“We have heard nothing from NCL Sports Pvt Ltd so far and if they finalise the tournament according to their previous date, we will change our schedule,” informed Mahakali Sports Society Chairman Suman Bhatta on Tuesday. The PM Cup Women’s National Cricket will be held at the Khulla Manch in Kanchanpur—the venue that hosted women’s cricket during the sixth National Games in 2012.

According NSC Member Secretary Keshav Kumar Bista, the event managers will have to manage Rs 5.3 million out of the total estimated budget of Rs 8.8 million. The sports governing body is providing Mahakali Sports Rs 3.5 million. “We believe we have to let sports event management company like these flourish so that the tournaments are organised smoothly,” said Bista. NSC has also given the PM Cup Men’s National One-Day cricket tournament management rights to Nepalaya International.

The winners and runners-up of the Women’s Twenty20 will get Rs 500,000 and Rs 300,000. The organisers said they will provide further updates on the tournament in due course. National team coach Jagat Tamatta expected the tournament to bolster women’s cricket. “We already have two franchise tournaments and this event will help provide more exposure to our girls. The national women’s team has shown a huge promise with their recent performance in international tournaments and its time we give them more playing time,” said Tamatta adding the venue will be tournament-ready according to the schedule.

“The venue in Kanchanpur has already hosted women’s cricket during the sixth National Games. The outfield and fencing works only need to be upgraded. The only worry is the maintenance of the pitch which we will start from tomorrow (Wednesday). We can assure that the venue will be ready on time,” said the coach.
