Committee to probe electoral fraud likely to seek time extension
The parliamentary committee formed to investigate into the alleged irregularities during the Constituent Assembly election last year is planning to seek a time extension.Ekantipur Report
The committee's coordinator and Sadbhawana Party lawmaker, Laxman Lal Karna, said on Tuesday that they need more time to visit various districts in order to investigate the complaints regarding vote rigging. The committee's time expires on September 24.
“We have held a seminar in Kathmandu and we plan to organise similar activities at district level as well. For that, we will be needing more time,” said Karna.
The seven-member committee was formed after the opposition parties UCPN (Maoist) and some Madhes-based parties claimed of irregularities during the CA election conducted on November 19, 2013.
Formation of the committee was one of the clauses in the four-point understanding among Nepali Congress, CPN-UML, UCPN (Maoist) and United Democratic Madhesi Front which was signed in December.
The committee was formed in June after the major opposition, UCPN (Maoist), obstructed the Legislature-Parliament for nearly two weeks demanding implementation of the four-point agreement.
Besides Karna, the other members in the committee are Bal Bahadur KC and Kamal Pangeni from Nepali Congress, Bhim Rawal and Bhanubhakta Dhakal from CPN-UML, and Rekha Sharma and Ram Narayan Bidari from the UCPN (Maoist). The committee has received 10 complaints on electoral fraud.
