UML picks Bidhya Bhandari as presidential candidate
A Standing Committee (SC) meeting of the ruling CPN-UML has picked leader Bidhya Devi Bhandari as its candidate for the presidential election.A Standing Committee (SC) meeting of the ruling CPN-UML has picked leader Bidhya Devi Bhandari as its candidate for the presidential election.
A leader present in the meeting informed that Bhandari was decided as the party’s presidential candidate. Former Speaker Subash Chandra Nembang was another leader on the fray for the post.
UML Chairman and Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli had proposed Bhandari as the candidate. Some leaders discussed on Nembang’s name but the meeting commissioned Bhandari as the candidate.
UML had organised an all-party meet on Sunday to gather support for its candidate. Nepali Congress, also present in the meeting, had informed that it would field its own candidate in the election. However, the main opposition party is still undecided on the name of the candidate.
Another major party UCPN (Maoist) has decided to support UML’s candidate and laid its claim on the vice president’s post.
The candidates will file their nomination on Tuesday. The election to select the president and vice president will be held on Wednesday.
