Former UN secretary-general and Nobel Peace Prize winner Kofi Annan has died. He was 80.
A statement issued by Annan’s foundation said he passed away peacefully on Saturday after a short illness.
Annan became the first black African to take up the role of the world’s top diplomat serving as seventh secretary general of United Nations between 1997 and 2006.
The foundation described him as a "global statesman and deeply committed internationalist who fought throughout his life for a fairer and more peaceful world".
International news agencies reported he died in hospital in Bern, Switzerland with his wife, Nane, and three children Ama, Kojo and Nina, by his side.
