Lower House Speaker Krishna Bahadur Mahara on Thursday said some legal articles that limit the press freedom could be amended.
Referring to the amendments of some laws on the Right to Information (RTI) made in the past after necessary consultations with the concerned sectors, he said, “Any weakness in the laws on fundamental rights can be amended.”
Mahara said this while speaking at a seminar on ‘Constitution and Full Press Freedom’, organised here jointly by the Federation of Nepali Journalists and the Nepal America Journalists’ Association (NEAJA).
Recognising the role of media in building a healthy and competitive society, he urged journalists to remain committed to Nepal and its citizens.
At the seminar, senior journalist Harihar Birahi, a former President of the FNJ, rued ‘the attempts’ to restrict the freedom of press through various laws despite the constitution guaranteeing full press freedom.
Birahi urged journalists to play their part in tackling the challenges that the media faces.
Another former FNJ President Shiva Gaule urged media-persons to work for the people despite all challenges.
Current FNJ President Gobinda Acharya said the protest would continue until the laws that muzzle freedom of the press are amended.
