Two children in Kanchanrup Municipality of Saptari district died of unidentified disease on October 23 and 24 respectively. The deceased have been identified as 13-year-old Krishna Sada of Kanchanrup-5 and 6-year-old Krish Jung Katuwal of Kanchanrup-7.
According to Senior Auxiliary Health Worker Dambar Prasad Gupta, the victims suffered from a fever, nausea, headache and blood vomiting before they died.
The case comes just two months after four persons, including two children, died and more than 2,000 fell ill due to an outbreak of an influenza that was later confirmed as Swine flu (H1N1) and Hong Kong flu (H3N2) by the Epidemiology and Disease Control Division (EDCD).
People of various wards of the municipality are in abject terror, fearing that it may have been another outbreak of the fatal influenza in the area. Mayor Basanta Kumar Mishra said the locals are in panic after the recent deaths. According to him, the number of attendee-students has decreased significantly in Brikuti Secondary School where both the deceased studied.
A municipal official said it had informed the District Public Health Office (DPHO) and the EDCD, and has urged them to take initiatives to control the disease.
“We have already written to the DPHO, provincial government and the federal government about the disease and asked for help to control it,” said Mayor Mishra. However, medical specialists have yet to reach the affected area.
DPHO chief Niranjan Yadav said the office is preparing to dispatch a medical team to the affected area.
“I am making the necessary arrangements for controlling the disease,” he added. Chief District Officer Surendra Paudel said he had no knowledge of the outbreak. He, however, said he would take stock of the situation and make arrangements for controlling the disease.
