The Nepali Congress has approved a comprehensive economic policy of the party that envisages lifting country’s economic status and accelerating the pace of development.
The ongoing Central Working Committee meeting of the party on Monday approved the new economic policy after receiving several feedbacks and suggestions from CWC members, said the party in a statement.
The policy was approved with suggestions incorporated by various CWC members, said Prakash Sharan Mahat, who led a panel to chart out the NC’s economic policy.
“We have received many feedbacks and suggestions from CWC members. After incorporating them, we will present the policy at the upcoming Mahasamiti meeting which is set to convene on Saturday,” said Mahat.
The NC has also decided to form a research committee consisting of experts from various economic fronts to review and assess the country’s economy in the last 25 years. The committee will suggest a new roadmap on economic and social policies that the country should adopt.
The report also criticised the economic indicators presented by the KP Oli government while presenting the white paper, saying that
they were exaggerated and misleading.
The NC has alleged that the incumbent government has failed to achieve the desired economic growth, though the ruling Nepal Communist Party has strong government at the centre and leads
six governments at the provincial level.
The NC also expressed concern over the government’s plan to fell a large number of trees for the construction of the proposed Nijgadh International Airport, its failure to construct transmission lines to distribute the energy produced by several hydropower plants, and the move to award the contract of Budhi Gandaki Hydroelectric Project to the controversial China Gezhouba Group Company Limited.
The NC report also raised questions over the procurement of two wide-body
aircraft by the Nepal
Airlines, claiming that a huge financial embezzlement had been committed during the procurement process of the planes.
Expressing concern over imposing quota system while procuring sugar, covering
up the controversial gold smuggling case, the main opposition party criticised the Oli government for expanding the ambit of various taxes.
Accusing Oli government of promoting crony capitalism, the NC’s economic report predicts that such government cannot harness the foreign investment in Nepal.
In its economic policy, the NC has mentioned that it
will work for comprehensive prosperity and equality;
sustainable economic development based on high productivity, policies and programmes to develop qualitative tourism, and promoting electric vehicles by banning fossil fuel vehicles from 2030.
The party has also proposed creating an equitable welfare state by introducing several social security schemes, promoting youth entrepreneurship for job creation,
and carrying out effective management and implementation of fiscal federalism.
