A total of 9,671 civil servants had applied for the Voluntary Retirement Scheme (VRS). The current government decided to discontinue the scheme citing possible shortage of government employees and cost involved while implementing the package.
Under the scheme, civil servants over 50 years, and who had completed 20 years government service could take exit from civil service under VRS. Under the package, the employees were promised pension for seven years in a single package with option of getting the pension regularly after seven years. After the government did not implement the scheme, 975 civil servants have withdrawn their application, said the Federal Affairs Ministry. “We have saved around Rs20 billion from being wasted by implementing the VRS,” said Paneru, joint secretary at the ministry.
