According to an aide to Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli, Sherpa was summoned at Prime Minister’s residence in Baluwatar this morning where senior party leaders including Oli and Pushpa Kamal Dahal asked her to resign from her post.
Talking to the Post, Sherpa, however, denied resigning from the ambassador post.
Sherpa was recalled to Kathmandu after her former driver Wongchhu Sherpa accused her and her husband of trafficking Nepali citizens to Australia.
Foreign Ministry had sought an explanation from Sherpa over the allegations and asked her to report to the ministry in person because her written explanation was not convincing.
According to Wongchhu’s account, he had collected more than Rs3 million, on behalf of the ambassador and her husband, from several individuals in Nepal in return for a safe passage to Australia. He said he had promised to collect another Rs6 million for the couple before leaving his job. Wongchhu had accompanied the ambassador to Canberra after she was assigned to the role in May 2017.
