New Delhi has accepted Nilamber Acharya as Nepal’s ambassador to India, more than two months after the government nominated him.
“We received his agreemo on Thursday,” confirmed a senior Foreign Ministry official. President Bidya Devi Bhandari will make an announcement about it soon, the official said.
Nepali officials were said to be lobbying with Indian officials to send the approval soon. Acharya was an interim minister after the political change of 1990. He later became the ambassador to Sri Lanka. Before setting out to take up his second diplomatic assignment, Acharya has to take the oath from Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli under a new arrangement.
Acharya and other ambassadorial nominees will undergo a weeklong training at the Institute of Foreign Affairs on various aspects of diplomatic conduct, protocol, global trends and Nepal’s priorities. On November 11 last year, the Cabinet decided to appoint him as the ambassador to India. The post has been vacant since Deep Kumar Upadhyay resigned ahead of the November 2017 elections.
To head its Delhi mission, the government had been looking for a candidate with democratic credentials who is well versed on Nepal-India relations and international affairs while being supportive of the communist administration.
