Disputes in naming Province 2

Jan 20, 2019-

Province 2 government has been facing difficulties to decide the province’s name, its permanent capital and official language due to the rising disputes among various political parties.

The majority government of Rastriya Janata Party Nepal and Sanghiya Samajwadi Forum Nepal needs two-third majority to fix the province’s name. They want to name state 2 as Madhes Province. However, Nepal Communist Party (NCP) and Nepali Congress want to name Province 2 as Mithila Province.

Sundar Bishwokarma, NCP lawmaker, said they have not discussed about the province’s name in the provincial assembly.

“People have suggested different names for the province. We have yet to decide the province’s name,” said Bishwokarma.

Another NCP lawmaker, Anita Yadav, said the provincial assembly will decide the name of the province.

Meanwhile, the majority of participants in a programme organised to study possible names and capital for Province 2 on Friday proposed to name Janakpurdham as the capital of Province 2. Various political parties, right activists, campaigners, youths, students, women, representatives of Dalits, among others, had attended the programme.
