Police arrested Bardiya Land Revenue Office’s officiating officer Ram Kumar on Monday on the charge of transferring the title of a government land to a civilian by forging documents. So far, 14 people have been arrested in connection to the incident.
Banke Police SP Arun Poudel informed that those arrested include 11 employees of Postal Office, Land Reforms Office, Land Revenue Office, two agents and a civilian.
Police have also launched a manhunt for chief of Bardiya Land Revenue Office Krishna Prasad Gyawali among other officials. Gyawali stopped coming to office from March 17.
The investigation revealed that Gyawali, with Nayab Subba (non-gazetted first class officer) and Krishna Sharma were found illegally registering a plot of government land in an individual’s name in December last year.
According to police investigation, Fairul Hassan Ansari of Nepalgunj illegally transferred a land belonging to Sikta Irrigation Project in his father’s name with the help of Land Revenue Office’s staff. Later Fairul tried to transfer land ownership to his mother’s name following the death of his father.
The incident of land irregularity unfolded when police was investigating the murder of Junith Ansari living in Nepalgunj. Fairul and Junith were partners in illegally transferring the government land, police said.
Police linked the murder case with illegal land transfer after they found torn pages of Bardiya Land Revenue Office’s record book in Junith’s rented apartment in Nepalgunj. The torn pages were related to the government land’s title transfer from Fairul’s father to his mother. Police suspect Junith was murdered after he refused to give these documents to Fairul.
