Sudurpaschim State Hospital sans doctors for almost two months

The Sudurpaschim State Hospital in Dadeldhura is without doctors for nearly two months now.
Though the state hospital, which was formed by merging Dadeldhura Mission Hospital and District Hospital, is supposed to have 29 specialist doctors, the positions have never been filled. The hospital had only two doctors at the time of the merger, but they too had to be let go after they received transfer order.
With not even one doctor present, medical services at the hospital have been greatly affected.
“There are no doctors to even conduct regular health check-ups,” one hospital staff said. “Dr Jitendra Kandel who was our only specialist doctor and the hospital’s medical superintendent was transferred to another health facility immediately after the merger.”
Around 400 patients visit the hospital daily from various hill districts of the Sudurpaschim Province.
The hospital is also reeling under a shortage of health workers. More than 40 positions of medical workers are lying vacant.
Dr Kandel, who has been transferred to a primary health centre, said the hospital had always lacked staff and infrastructure.
“This is not a new problem we are looking at. But the doctor integration process has certainly made the situation worse,” he said.
