Singh, Shah duo set new national records

Gaurika Singh extended her goal medals haul to four including yet another national record in the swimming meet held under the eighth National Games in Nepalgunj on Monday.
The 16-year-old, who lives in London with her family and arrive here specially for the Games, struck 100m freestyle gold in a new national record to add to another title in 400m freestyle on Monday. The 100m-400m double comes a day after she won 800m freestyle and 50m backstroke gold on Sunday. She had won the 50m backstroke in a new national record of 30.85 lowering her own previous mark of 31.22 seconds.
Representing the Tribhuvan Army Club in the Games, Singh bagged the 400m gold with the timings of 4:44.81. Her Army clubmate Duana Lama finished in silver with the timings of 4:50.47 while Nepal APF Club swimmer Tisa Shakya collected bronze in 5:12.04 minutes. Singh then rounded up the day’s programme with another gold in 100m freestyle in a new national record time. She clocked 59.60 seconds lowering her own previous mark of 59.91. Her teammate Sophia Shah was restricted to silver with the timings of 1:02.59 and Tisa won bronze in 1:03.56. Singh is Nepal’s first ever swimmer to earn individual swimming medals winning one silver and three bronze medals during the 12th South Asian Games in Guwahati, India in 2016.
Nepal Police Club swimmer Sayed Hamza Shah also broke men’s 50m butterfly national record on Monday. In wining the gold medal in the event, Shah clocked 27.00 seconds to marginally lower his own previous mark of 27.10. It was his fourth medal in two days after also securing silver in 100m freestyle on Monday to go with another silver in 100m breaststroke on Sunday. Anubhav Subba (27.22) of Army and Tenzing Namdol Ryan Gurung (29.62) of APF won silver and bronze in men’s 50m butterfly. Gurung had on Sunday won the men’s 50m backstroke gold in a new national record of 32.81.
Singh did not enter the women’s 50m butterfly and 200m breaststroke allowing Sophia and Duana to clinch a gold medal each on Monday. Sophia won the 50m butterfly in 33.50 seconds to push Anushiya Tandukar (34.75) of NPC in silver and Shreebi Maharjan (36.62) of APF to bronze positions. Duana claimed the women’s 200m title in 2:55.09, comfortably ahead of her Army teammate Upaasti Maharjan (3:00.53). Adipsha Vaidya of NPC won the bronze in 3:03.62. It was Duana’s third gold medal of the meet after winning the 100m breaststroke and 200m butterfly on Sunday.
Nathan Dorje Sherpa, representing the Non Residential Nepali Association, struck his third gold medal of the meet by sealing the men’s 400m freestyle title on Monday. Sherpa timed 4:33.09 to comfortably finish ahead of APF duo Nasir Husain (4:39.47) and Urgen Maharjan (5:01.50). Sherpa had won 800m freestyle and 200m butterfly gold medals on Sunday.
Shuvam Shrestha of APF and Alex Shah of Army clinched the other two gold medals on Monday. Shrestha bagged the men’s 200m breaststroke title with the timings of 2:31.44. Dipankar Awale (2:37.81) of NPC finished in silver and Bikash Kumal (2:39.57) of Province 1 in bronze position. It was second gold for Shrestha after winning the 100m title in new national record time of 1:08.15 on Sunday.
Alex Shah clinched the men’s 100m freestyle gold in 55.63 seconds, just ahead of Hamza who clocked 55.94. Anubhav Subba finished in bronze place in 57.30. Shah earlier set a new national record during the 100m freestyle heats with the timings of 55.38.
