More than 40 people from Bhairabpur in Lalbandi Municipality-3, Sarlahi, are suffering from chickenpox, a highly contagious disease caused by the varicella-zoster virus.
According to the villagers, a majority of women and children have contracted chickenpox in the settlement. Ram Narayan Chaudhary, ward chairman of Lalbandi-3, said that people started falling ill due to chicken pox from mid-March.
“Villagers have a superstitious belief that their god is angry with them and they don’t talk about their disease with anybody else. They don’t even go to the health facilities for treatment on time,” Chaudhary said.
On Tuesday evening, a team of health workers inspected the affected area and collected blood samples of patients for a lab test.
Dr Chandan Chaudhary, chief at the Primary Health Centre in Lalbandi, said that the blood samples have been sent to the office of World Health Organisation in Janakpur for the test.
