Police identified the deceased as Bimala Bohara (14) and Rinu Bohara (8) of Surma-2. The victims fell into the flooded stream as a makeshift wooden bridge snapped while they were crossing the river.
The incident happened as the girls were returning home from school. Bimala’s body was found soon after the incident, while Rinu’s was recovered 4km downstream on Saturday.
Local people have to risk their lives while crossing the river, especially during rainy season, as there is not a bridge across the river.
Chief of Surma Rural Municipality Nara Bahadur Bohara said 29 people have died while crossing the stream in the past nine years.
