The International Federation of Journalists has said Nepal’s new Criminal Codes Act 2018 curtails the freedom of expression and press.
Expressing serious concerns over the restrictive provisions, the IFJ has demanded immediate amendments to ensure that they adhere to the international standards and principles of freedom of expression and press freedom.
In a release on Tuesday, the IFJ said some provisions of the Act, especially Sections 293 to 308 relating to privacy and defamation, restrict press freedom and criminalise expression.
“Such provisions will be misused to harass journalists and media; and obstruct independent as well as investigative journalism,” the federation stated. (PR)
