Two gamblers jump from third floor to escape police, die in hospital

Acting on a tip-off, the Metropolitan Police Range, Kathmandu, deployed a team to raid the gambling den operating in Tendu Sherpa’s three-storey house last night.
Critically injured in the escape bid, Ghale and Tamang passed away during the course of treatment at the hospital.
Speaking to the Post, Chief of Metropolitan Police Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Basanta Lama said, “After the gamblers came to know the police team approached the building, they tried to flee. The duo had jumped from the window due to the fear of being arrested.”
Police arrested 24 gamblers and confiscated Rs 458,000 cash from the gambling den. Police have arrested house owner Tendu Sherpa for letting his house to gamblers.
The preliminary investigation reveals most arrested gamblers sold construction materials such as stone grits.
The Police will file a case against the gamblers in Kathmandu District Court on Sunday.
SSP Lama said house owner Sherpa charged a letting fee of Rs 10,000 per night to the gamblers. Police are hunting gambling den operator Hema Gurung who has fled from the locality.
With Dashain festival round the corner, police have increased patrols and surveillance to bust gambling dens that often witness disputes leading to heinous crimes such as murder.
