Nepal Police marked its 63rd Police Day at an event held at its headquarters in the capital on Thursday.

Speaking at the event, Prime Minister K P Sharma Oli assured government’s commitment to provide resources, infrastructure and work force to strengthen the capabilities of Nepal Police. “Nepal Police should continue its duty with utmost honesty and hard work and must be more responsible and professional,” the prime minister said.

“Given the current situation when technology-aided crimes, cross-border security and terrorism are increasing, the government is deeply concerned and will play a proactive role to facilitate regional co-operation and even with the Interpol.” Speaking at the event, Inspector General of Police Sarbendra Khanal reiterated his commitment to transform Nepal Police into a security force that is more effective, disciplined and professional. “Nepal Police is the only crime investigation body in the country and its track record of solving number of crimes and safeguarding the public has been well appraised. The institution continues to crack cases and arrest criminals, although it takes time in some cases,” said Khanal.

“We are concerned about public safety the most. Nepal Police is dedicated to bring new plans and policies to

prevent crimes more than its control.” The Khanal’s remarks come at a time when Nepal Police and the IGP are facing relentless criticism from all quarters of the society for being ineffective and irresponsible in fulfilling their duties.
