After a long dispute among its leaders, the ruling Nepal Communist Party (NCP) is preparing for an official discussion over the ‘poor’ performance of the government.
NCP leaders, observing the government’s activities in the past eight months, have been urging Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli and his team to evaluate the performance while those in power are defending their activities.
“A host of issues need to be discussed in the party’s secretariat meeting, including the performance of the government which would ultimately taken to the standing committee,” said party Spokesperson Narayan Kaji Shrestha.
After most of the standing committee members questioned the government’s performance, Prime Minister and party Co-chair KP Sharma Oli had told them that the party would hold a separate meeting to discuss the government’s performance. But with such a meeting not forthcoming, the leaders started airing their views regarding the government’s activities through informal channels.
On the last day of the budget session of the House of Representatives, senior party leader Madhav Nepal had expressed his dissatisfaction at the government’s activities during a tea reception for the standing committee members with around two dozen leaders in attendance.
Many leaders are not satisfied with the government’s performance and the party’s lower units are yet to be unified, the provincial and local governments have also failed to deliver.
NCP leaders at the helm of provincial governments have been accusing PM Oli for not cooperating them to empower the newly formed structures of their governments. They were irked by the abrupt postponement of the first ever inter-state council meeting scheduled for September 9. The meeting was expected to resolve the ongoing debate between the provincial and federal governments.
Party Spokesperson Shrestha said the party’s secretariat meeting scheduled for Wednesday afternoon would also discuss on giving a complete shape to provincial committees besides finalising the district committees and sister wings.
Secretariat members of the party have been eagerly waiting to discuss on a host of issues, including the government activities. They feel neglected as all decisions are being taken by the nine-member party secretariat.
“We will raise the issues, including that of the government’s performance, during the standing committee meeting on October 29-30,” said Devendra Poudel, a standing committee member. He said the secretariat meeting will finalise the agenda for the standing committee meeting.
