The 2015 General Assembly of the United Nations set a total of ambitious 17 goals, collectively called the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)— including objectives such as No Poverty, No Hunger, and Gender Equality, among others—to be achieved by the year 2030. Seventeen corresponding logos were designed, each depicting the essence of the desired target.
In order to appeal more to local institutions and actors, the UN in Nepal has started localising the logos. For a start, the logos have been translated into Mithila arts, so as to carry the impress of indigenous art practices.
Seventeen new logos have been designed by a dozen artists from the Janakpur Women Development Centre, an organisation comprising of veteran artists practicing Mithila arts. The Centre’s chairperson, Satish Sah, informed the Post that the centre currently exports its output to various European countries and the US. In the past year, it exported artworks worth Rs 1.5 million to the US alone.
The UN now plans to translate the descriptions of the goals and their logos into five other Nepali ethnic languages and art practices.
