After years of rehabilitation, the freed Kamaiyas (bonded labourers) at the Bani Camp in Kanchanpur are still struggling to earn their living. Bipti Chaudhary, a freed Kamaiya said she has no option but to collect sand and pebbles on the river for livelihood. It’s difficult to provide two square meals to my family with my earning, she said. Bipti and other freed Kamaiyas said the land plot of 5 katthas that the government provided on the riverbed is not fertile. The freed-Kamaiya members have also asked the authorities to develop an embankment on the bank of Machheli river to protect their settlement from flood. (RSS)
