Of late, the fuel smugglers have been active in the Nepal-India border areas as the
prices of petrol and diesel in India are about Rs 20 more per litre than in Nepal.
Motorcycles and four wheelers with Indian registration numbers often visit petrol pumps in the bordering area of Nepal to get fuel.
The smugglers, with the help of some locals, attacked the police patrol when the latter stopped them from smuggling fuel to India. The police team, led by Assistant Sub-Inspector Bishnu Dev Yadav, seized the diesel that was getting smuggled to India.
According to the Superintendent of Police (SP) Rewati Dhakal, the smugglers fled the scene after the security personnel seized the fuel, only to return with other smugglers and locals to attack the police team. The incident took place at around 3am.
The smugglers had taken away the personnel’s weapons, which was later recovered from a field near the incident site, said SP Dhakal.
Dhakal added that they are coordinating with the Indian police to nab the guilty.
ASI Yadav, head constable Prem Bahadur Rana and constable Arjun Chaudhary were injured in the incident. Chaudhary, who sustained serious head injuries, is receiving treatment at LS Neuro and General Hospital in Birgunj.
