Chief Justice Cholendra Shumsher Rana has vowed to free the judiciary of “brokers”, even if that meant amending the existing laws.

The issue of amending the existing laws was under discussion at the full court, he told reporters on Sunday.

The judiciary is working to amend the existing laws so that brokers and fixers could be charged with court contempt, he said.

“Brokers are everywhere. We are trying to minimise their role by filing contempt of court cases, for which we are preparing a draft of necessary laws.”

Earlier, while facing the parliamentary hearing committee before his appointment, Rana had admitted that corruption was rampant in the judiciary and intimated his commitment to get rid of malpractices in the judiciary.

To form an impartial and corruption-free judiciary, Rana said there was no need of Judicial Reforms Commission.

With the new constitution affording the necessary provisions for the judiciary, the commission is not necessary, he said.

Asked about the automated assignment of cases introduced to decrease the role of brokers and fixers in court hearings, Rana said it was a difficult system to manage as there were specific cases to be heard by some specific justices.
