Bharatpur metropolis getting free of mercury

A campaign to free Bharatpur Metropolitan City of mercury, which was initiated by the Centre for Public Health and Environmental Development, has reached its final stage.“All hospitals in the city have stopped the use of mercury as directed by the centre. The city will be declared free of chemicals this week,” said the Executive Director of the centre Ram Charitra Sah.
Mercury can affect the heart and kidney as well as neuro, reproductive, digestive and respiratory system of a human body, he said.
Now, the hospitals have switched to digital thermometers and android blood pressure monitors from mercury-based devices. Dental hospitals and clinics have also stopped using mercury following an agreement between the Centre and the Nepal Dental Association in this regard, said Sah.
Besides hospitals, mercury is also used in manufacturing dolls, colours, battery and electric bulbs.
