Two dead, dozens others injured during Holi celebrations in Valley

At least two people died and dozens others were injured in various accidents and assaults during Holi celebrations in the Kathmandu Valley on Wednesday.

Sachin Shrestha, 17, was killed on the spot when a speeding motorbike hit him in Satdobato, Lalitpur, at around 5:30 pm. The motorcyclist was taken into custody, police said.

Similarly, a motorcyclist identified as 31-year-old Sunil Shahi died of injuries he had suffered in an accident in Dallu, Kathmandu. He died at the Thamel-based Manmohan Memorial Community Hospital, police said.

Shahi had crashed his speeding motorcycle into pedestrians, injuring at least three people.

Police are after a man who was riding pillion with Shahi at the time of the accident. Eyewitnesses said the man rode off in the motorcycle after the crash.     

Hospitals in the Valley received dozens of cases involving Holi revellers injured in accidents and fights on Wednesday.

The National Trauma Centre treated several people injured in Holi-related accidents and fights. Health workers at the Centre’s emergency ward said that they treated several people involved in motorcycle accidents. Most of them were riding their bikes under the influence of alcohol.

Some children were also injured after falling off the roofs of their homes while throwing water balloons.  

Seven-year-old Rashik Khatri, sustained serious head injury after falling off the roof in Dillibazar. He received six stitches on his forehead and was recommend for a CT-scan.

Nine-year-old Barsha Thapa was also rushed to the Centre with a broken leg. She, too, had fallen from the roof of her house.

Ramesh Balami, 21, was admitted with a wound in his right arm that he had sustained in a fight after his motorcycle collided with another.

Tilak Pandey, 31, was also admitted after he was found in an unconscious state. Doctors at the emergency ward said that he had excessive alcohol in his system which might have led to an accident causing a serious injury to his head. The number of patients with injuries were rising as the evening drew to a close.
