A 70-year-old woman was killed in an elephant attack at Gairitol in Golbaazar Municipality-10, Siraha, on Friday night.

The deceased has been identified as Buddimaya Thapa Magar of Golbazar-10. According to Dev Narayan Mahato, the ward chairman of Golbazar-10, the elephant attacked the woman while she was returning home from her neighbour’s house at around 8:30pm. Magar’s house was also damaged by the animal.

Gairitol, which lies in the foothill of the Chure forest, is a settlement of 15 families, mostly landless people who live on public land.

Wild elephants enter the Chure region in the district every year from the Koshi Tappu Wildlife Reserve through Udayapur and wreak havoc. A herd of five elephants entered the area two months ago and destroyed several houses and crops. Police said the pachyderms destroyed seven houses in Gola Muksar, Musaharniya and Jamdaha, and damaged crops worth around Rs 200,000.
