India ‘set to construct’ Mahakali dyke
Indian authorities have endorsed a project to construct an embankment in the Mahakali river along Nepal-India border, Atmaram Raya, chief of the People’s Embankment Office in Mahendranagar.Chitranga Thapa
The matter was discussed during a meeting of the Nepal-India Joint Technology Team in Kathmandu last week.
Indian authorities had also struck an agreement with the Nepali side to construct a 1,200 meter embankment on the Indian side last October.
“In the meeting, Indian side reiterated its agreement to start the construction work and informed that they will complete it before monsoon,” Raya said. In the meeting, Indian officials agreed to complete the construction work before monsoon.
Although estimated budget has been prepared and survey of the area has been carried out, the Indian side has been delaying the construction work.
“Construction of an embankment at Bhujela in the Nepali side is under way. Local people in villages like Bhujela will get rid of perennial floods once construction of embankment in Nepali as well as Indian sides is completed,” Raya added.
“The project has been endorsed. We will go for a tender process soon,” Karunakar Panta, engineer at the People’s Embankment Office, quoted an Indian official as saying.
