BIMSTEC SUMMIT: Koirala to meet Indian PM in Myanmar
Prime Minister Sushil Koirala will meet Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Tuesday on the sidelines of the BIMSTEC summit in Myanmar.Koirala is leaving for Myanmar on Sunday to participate in the third summit of the Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation to be held in Naypyidaw, the Capital. This will be Koirala’s first foreign visit after assuming the top executive office 16 days ago.
A Cabinet meeting on Tuesday, shortly after the swearing-in of 19 ministers, had approved PM’s visit to Myanmar and the size of the delegation.
As the leader of the Nepali delegation, Koirala will also meet with leaders of the regional grouping from India, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Thailand, Myanmar, Bhutan and Thailand on the sidelines, said officiating Foreign Secretary Shanker Das Bairagi, who is leaving for the summit on Thursday.
Koirala will renew his call on Singh to visit Nepal. The two prime ministers will discuss the political developments in Nepal and other bilateral issues, sources said.
Koirala will meet the opposition leader of Myanmar, Aung San Suu Kyi, in Yangoon on Wednesday after the conclusion of the summit, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The summit kicks off on Saturday and will close on Tuesday.
Similarly, newly elected Foreign Minister Mahendra Pandey will leave for Myanmar on Friday. He is entrusted to sign three agreements at the summit on Nepal’s behalf. Three agreements—establishing a weather and climate centre in New Delhi, permanent BIMSTEC Secretariat in Dhaka, Bangladesh, and BIMSTEC culture centre in Bhutan—will be signed on the occasion.
The prospect of finalising a free trade agreement among the member states, promotion of tourism, greater connectivity within the regional grouping and tackling climate change are on the agenda.
